SMC's Holiday Wish List — Find Joy in the Spirit of Giving

Dear Friend,

My favorite part of the holiday season has always been the spirit of giving. Finding just the right thing to brighten someone's day, or make life a little easier for them, is what brings joy to my heart. This is the same reason I started our holiday Wish List — for the joy of helping those who help manatees. And it is because of your generous hearts that this effort has been such a wonderful success. Each December, you open your hearts to give to a cause you love.

This year, our Wish List features items for our dear friends at Wildtracks in Belize, the country's only manatee rehabilitation center. Over the years, you've gotten to know the manatees of Wildtracks from the stories in our newsletters. Starting with orphan Twiggy in 2010, who is now an adult swimming happily in Belize's coastal waters, to newer arrivals like tiny baby Hope who washed ashore during a hurricane in 2016, these manatees have been nurtured back to health with the help of your donations. This Wish List contains the powdered milk formula and vitamins that orphan manatees so desperately need to survive, as well as other kitchen items to support food prep operations. You'll also find items to assist with search and rescues of manatees, including a transport tank and hoop net for young orphans and a drone to further support search efforts. With the world's changing climate, the rehab pools at Wildtracks can sometimes become too warm during Belize's summers, so thermometers and a pool cooler can also be found on this year's list. In addition to our old friends, we've also had the pleasure to make new friends this year. Aristide Kamla is a manatee researcher from Cameroon in West Africa, who works in an area called Lake Ossa. The computers on the Wish List are to support his research and education efforts. Aristide and I will be working together in the new year to discuss how SMC can support comprehensive conservation and research plans for Lake Ossa.

As always, it's you who make our work possible and give us the resources to help protect manatees and their habitat in countries all over the world.
