Manatee Action Opportunity — Social Media Watch

Dear Action Team Member,

Can you help us spread the word on social media?

Manatee being given water

Sometimes we come across problematic posts showing people feeding, touching, or giving water to manatees. This one, tagged #manatee, showed a manatee drinking fresh water from a hose. At Save the Manatee Club, we have found that a friendly, educational reminder can help someone understand why this behavior is wrong.

If you see a post on social media that displays problematic actions, such as feeding or giving water to manatees, please try to educate the person. Do not hit the “like” button. Here’s some suggested comments you can copy and paste. Feel free to tag @Save the Manatee Club on Facebook, @SavetheManatee on Twitter, or @adoptamanatee on Instagram and YouTube to bring it to our attention.

Feeding or Giving Water
Hi, I’m a volunteer for Save the Manatee Club, and I wanted to let you know that it’s not a good idea to give manatees food or water. It can cause the manatee to start associating people with handouts. Then, they may readily approach docks and motorboats, putting themselves at risk for injuries or life-threating collisions. It might look like the manatee enjoys it, but it can get hurt later on. Plus, it’s against the law. Thank you for doing the right thing next time and resisting the urge to feed or give water to manatees!

Touching
Hi, I’m a volunteer for Save the Manatee Club, and I wanted to let you know that it’s not a good idea to touch or pet manatees. They may seem to enjoy it, but these actions can cause the manatee to start associating people and boats with a “reward”. Then, they may readily approach docks or motorboats, putting themselves at risk for injuries, life-threating collisions, or interactions with people who want to harm them. It might look like the manatee enjoys it, but it can get hurt later on. Plus it’s against the law. Thank you for doing the right thing next time and resisting the urge to touch or pet manatees!
